What is Brand tracking?
Brand tracking measures how awareness, consideration and equity shift over time—but without synthesis it becomes continuous noise for CXOs.
Brand tracking is the ongoing measurement of how a brand is perceived—awareness, consideration, imagery, preference—usually via repeating survey waves.
It is essential for accountability. It is also easy to misuse. Continuous waves can over-weight legacy brands and mass audiences, miss early category shifts, and produce percentage moves that look urgent but are noise.
The Canvas view
Tracking answers a lot of what. Leaders still need commercial context and human tension behind the number. Forums like The Leaders' Canvas push insights and business leaders to demand synthesis from tracking programmes, not larger decks.
Use it well
- Treat waves as signals to investigate, not automatic strategy triggers.
- Pair tracking with behavioural, retail and qualitative evidence (triangulation).
- Ask what human friction or desire the movement represents.
